Review - Colorado Springs 5/14/09

In order to make this show, I actually had to drive 5 hours north from Los Alamos, NM and use some vacation time at work. Since my family is in Colorado Springs, I figured I would go to this show as opposed to the one in Farmington, NM on Saturday. We get to the show at 8 p.m. and The Black Sheep had yet to open their doors. There was a line outside, though not as big as you would hope. The Colorado Springs rock station, 94.3 Kilo had been promoting the show pretty heavily the past couple of days and had indicated it was close to selling out. I wasn't exactly sure what kind of crowd to expect at the show, whether it would be Korn/metal fans or the Christian crowd. From what I could tell by the line outside, they seemed to be mostly Korn fans.

We get in the venue and the place definitely had a lot of room. There were no barricades in front of the stage so you could go right up to it. The first band that went on was Moss Assembly. They didn't have a singer but said they were looking for one. They were very heavy and very good. They pulled off the all-instrumental. The second band was 16 Second Stare. They defenitely did not belong on the tour. They sounded like bad 80's/southern rock. The crowd wasn't into them at all and at times I thought the crowd might boo them. As soon as they were done, I made sure I had a good spot by the stage.

As luck would have it, I got a spot directly in front of the mic where Head would be singing. The show as a whole started late and Head wasn't scheduled to come on until 11. The crowd was definitely getting restless at having to wait so long. When he finally came on with his band, the crowd went wild. Head looked at the crowd and then the band busted into Adonai and he did his trademark headbanging, but without the guitar. There were a few times his braids came dangerously close to hitting me in the face lol. It definitely blew me away at how heavy Adonai translates live. There was a huge, intense moshpit that started and took up most of the club. The crowd was into it the whole time.

Head stated that the Phoenix show was a warm-up and that this was the first official show of the tour. The entire show was intense. Before Rebel, he did talk about Korn and how people talked about how much the music helped them and that he hoped this music would do the same. Before Save Me From Myself, he gave a brief testimony talking about how he went from the drug addict to where he is at now with his beliefs.

Before Shake, he introduced the band and said they had been together about 6 weeks. From the way they played, you would have thought it was a lot longer. Every single member was unbelievably talented. They had great chemistry and were in sync the entire time. The drummer is quite possibly the best I've ever seen. He did a drum solo that completely blew me away. In my 10 years of going to concerts and seeing drum solos, I've never seen one as good as his. I wish my cell phone hadn't died, otherwise I would have taken video of it. Head did play guitar on the majority of songs, though he generally didn't play through the whole song. During the 7 min mark of Washed By Blood, when the song gets really heavy, it blew the crowd away. They went absolutely insane. All in all it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. Definitely worth the 10 hrs of driving I had to do. The set-list is as follows:

Adonai
Home
Rebel
Flush
Save Me From Myself
Drum Solo
Shake
Die Religion Die
Washed By Blood
